The Colorado Hail Problem — and What You Need to Know
The Colorado Front Range sits in the heart of “Hail Alley,” the corridor stretching from Texas to South Dakota that produces more severe hailstorms than anywhere in the U.S. Denver regularly sees multiple significant hail events per season, and Aurora — Hilltop's home base — is frequently in the impact zone.
What Hail Does to Your Roof
Standard architectural asphalt shingles can withstand small hail, but once stones reach 1 inch or larger, damage accumulates quickly. Hail knocks granules off the shingle surface — those granules are the shingle's UV protection. Without them, the asphalt oxidizes and becomes brittle. What starts as cosmetic damage becomes structural failure within a few years.
Hail also creates impact fractures in the mat beneath the granules. These fractures aren't always visible, but they compromise the shingle's waterproofing and structural integrity. An experienced Hilltop inspector can identify bruising through physical examination.
How We Document Hail Damage
Documentation is where most contractors fall short. Hilltop uses systematic inspection protocols that match adjuster standards: we mark damage by size and density across all roof planes, photograph every relevant surface (not just the roof — gutters, AC fins, window screens, and painted surfaces all tell the story), and provide a written inspection report.
When we attend adjuster inspections with you, we bring our own documentation. When adjusters miss damage — which happens regularly — we supplement with additional evidence and communicate directly with the carrier.
Class 4 Shingles: The Colorado Standard
If your roof is being replaced after hail damage, upgrading to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles is almost always worth it. These shingles use modified polymer technology to withstand 2-inch hail at 90 mph without cracking. In Colorado, many carriers offer a 20–30% premium discount for Class 4 roofs. The upgrade typically pays for itself within a few policy years.

Aurora Hail Insurance Claims — How Hilltop Helps
Most Aurora homeowners only file one or two hail claims in their lifetime. Adjusters and roofing carriers handle thousands. That asymmetry is why so many legitimate claims get underpaid or denied. Hilltop Contracting is built around closing that gap — we handle every step of the insurance claim so the process matches what your carrier already expects.
Free pre-claim inspection. We come out at no charge to document damage before you file. If we don't find covered damage, you don't file — and you don't pay anything.
Claim filing assistance. If damage is covered, we help you file with the right documentation attached from day one. Claims with proper photo evidence and scope detail get approved faster and at higher amounts.
Adjuster meeting attendance. We walk the roof with your insurance adjuster, bringing our own measurements and documentation. When adjusters miss damage — which happens regularly — we have the evidence ready on the spot.
Supplement negotiation. Initial scopes almost always miss items: code-required upgrades, vent boots, drip edge, shingle waste factors. Hilltop documents and submits supplements after the initial scope so your final payment matches the actual cost.
Installation and final invoice reconciliation.Once the claim is approved, we install. We reconcile our final invoice directly with your carrier — under Colorado's Roofing Bill (CRS 6-22 / SB 12-038), homeowners cannot legally waive their deductible, but Hilltop's full-service claim management adds no out-of-pocket cost above your insurance coverage.

Hail Damage FAQ
In Colorado, 1-inch hail (quarter-size) can damage standard asphalt shingles. Larger stones — 1.5 inches and up — cause visible denting and significant granule loss. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles perform markedly better, especially above 1.75 inches.
Check gutters for granule buildup, look for dents on aluminum fascia and AC units, and check downspout splash guards. On shingles, hail damage shows as soft dimples or bruising — impossible to see from the ground. Hilltop provides free inspections.
Under Colorado law (CRS 13-80-101), homeowners have up to 3 years from the date of loss to file a property damage claim. Most policies have shorter notice-of-loss windows — check your declarations page. Don't wait: documentation is harder as time passes and existing damage can be attributed to wear.
Hail damage shows as random bruising/dimpling and granule loss. Wind damage is directional — shingles lifted, creased, or blown off entirely, often in patterns aligned with wind direction. Both are typically covered by homeowner's insurance.
Not always immediately. Granule loss accelerates UV degradation, and bruising compromises the shingle's structural integrity over time. Leaks may not appear until 1–3 years post-storm. Filing before that happens is important for a successful claim.
Colorado prohibits insurers from raising individual premiums solely because of a weather-related claim. A hail claim is a different category from an at-fault claim. Ask your agent about your specific policy.
